Occasionally, my Duo's battery will cause the computer to act abnormally (intermittently shutting down, not starting up, etc.). What's happening? |
Most of the problems people experience with the Duo's batteries will result in the Duo:
- Shutting down intermittently when running on the battery alone.
- Displaying a warning message saying the battery isn't charging.
- Not starting from the battery alone but running fine using the power adapter.
In most cases, one or more of these symptoms is caused by a loose Duo battery. To correctly seat the battery:
- Choose Sleep or Shut Down from the Special menu.
- Close the display.
- Open the battery door by pressing the small button and sliding the door aside. The battery is physically attached to the door.
- Hold the battery so you can read the printing on the battery right side up.
- Pull the battery door to the left until you hear a DISTINCT click and it locks into place. It may take some effort the first few times, but it will loosen up in time. This aligns the door correctly so that when you insert the battery it will seat properly.
- Tilt the Duo up onto its back edge so the battery compartment is on top.
- Slide the battery most of the way in into the compartment, then drop it the last half-inch.
- Plug in the power adapter in case the battery is not fully charged.

First, check the model number on the bottom of your battery recharger. A recharger with a model number of M7778 will only charge Type I batteries. A recharger with a model number of M1812 will charge Type I, II or III batteries, but may need to be updated to use a Type III battery.
If a red light appears when you place a Type III battery into the recharger,
the recharger is either the older model or the recharger needs to be updated.
If you have a recharger model M1812 and you need to update it, follow these
steps:
- Shut down the PowerBook Duo computer, make sure the Type III battery and any
necessary software has been installed. If you're running System 7.5.1 the Type III Battery extension must be installed.
- Plug the power adapter into an AC outlet using the power cord that came with the computer.
- Snap the recharger onto the side of the power adapter.
- Plug the power adapter cable into the power adapter port on the back of the Duo computer.
- Turn on the PowerBook Duo to download the update to the charger.

After several attempts, Apple has finally produced a rather nice Duo keyboard. It comes new on the PowerBook Duo 2300, and can be obtained from an authorized Apple dealer. The current keyboards are Revision F, meaning their sixth try. Make sure you are getting a new keyboard and not a remanufactured one. The keyboard typically costs under $100 and should be installed by an authorized technician. Keep in mind that Duo keyboards typically don't last for more than a few years.
