The 512k is simply the 128k with four times as much memory. An Apple press release described this computer as a "powerful business computer" that allows users to "take advantage of larger documents and models, faster response time, and the more than 40 business productivity software packages now shipping."

The 512ke improves on the 512k by adding an 800k floppy-disk drive, a 128k ROM, support for systems up to 6.0.8, and SCSI. The "e" in 512ke appropriately stands for "enhanced."
